Tour Detail

DAY 1 > MANDALAY CITY IMPRESSIONS                                                                    [-/-/-]

On arrival to Mandalay you will be welcomed by Discovery DMC guide. Proceed with short drive Ava (Inwa) and tour the ruins of the ancient kingdom with horse carriage. We cross Myint Nge River with a small ferry to rejoin our driver for the journey to Sagaing one of the old kingdoms now one of the monastic centers of Myanmar. Enjoy the magnificent views from the Sagaing Hills, overlooking the river and hill side covered with countless pagodas. We can visit one of the monasteries or nunneries here should you wish. Continue to Mandalay city and visit the artisan quarters, where some of the oldest craftsmanship is showcased dating back to last kingdom of Myanmar. Observe the process of pounding gold leaf, detailing teak wood carvings and embroidering Myanmar tapestry.

We also see how bronze and marble Buddha statues are carved, cast and molded.

Next, we proceed to the highlights of Mandalay: the sacred Mahamuni Pagoda, housing one of the most significant Buddha images in the country, covered in several tons of gold leaf and the crown prize in long past wars between competing Myanmar kingdoms; the Golden Palace Monastery, the only surviving Royal Palace building in Mandalay, offering a glimpse of the original style and architecture of the Myanmar royals. Time permitting we can also visit nearby Kuthodaw Pagoda, a compound housing Buddha’s teachings carved in the sacred Pali script on stone slabs and regarded as the world’s largest book in terms of surface area.

DAY 2 > MANDALAY – PYIN OO LWIN – GOKTEIK GORGE BY TRAIN                            [-/-/-]

Early departure from your hotel in Mandalay and transfer by car to a former colonial hill station, Pyin Oo Lwin (May Myo), approximately 65km/1,5hrs away from Mandalay. The tranquil beauty of the town captured the minds of the British Administration, who developed it after defeating the last king of Myanmar. Burmese know the town for the flowers, fruits and vegetables that grow so well in its cooler climate. We board a local train and journey 3 hours to Naungpein Village. En route, the train crawls slowly across Gokteik Bridge, the scenic highlight of the day as the bridge spans over a 300m deep gorge. From Naungpein Village, we return to Pyin Oo Lwin by car and enjoy lunch en route (own account). Then, at the Botanical Gardens, we feast our eyes on the variety of flora available in the region and tour some local neighborhoods with beautiful colonial era houses built during the British rule.

We finish the day with panoramic views over the multi-tier cascading Anisakan waterfall at the View Point
