Discover ancestral aboriginal rock art and it's meaning juxtaposed against the first European migration at the Cooktown museum. Advertised price is for UP TO FOUR guests & includes tour.

Tour Detail

A unique air tour for up to four guests. Appreciate aboriginal and European settlement in one place and in one day. Cooktown is the only place in Australia where you can get and understanding of aboriginal use of the landscape overlaid with the changes brought to society by the first mass migration from Europe in the 19th century.

We depart at 7am and travel up the coast past Port Douglas & the Daintree to catch up with Aboriginal Elder, Willie Gordon, in Hopevale. We to arrive at this Aboriginal settlement at around 8 am, where Willie will meet you for the Rainbow Serpent Rock Art Tour. This is a cultural day tour where, story-keeper Willie, takes you to his ancestral rock art sites, set in stunning countryside high in the hills outside Cooktown. Here he shares the stories behind the art – stories which can only be told by Elders of the Nugal clan. This tour takes you through a dramatic landscape to six rock art sites. His interpretation of the ancient land use system overlaid with the current land use system is particularly revealing especially when considering how both systems can work together and learn from each other.

Back at Cooktown at about 1 pm, time to catch a bit of lunch in town before walking up to the Cooktown Museum. This has an extremely relevant collection covering James Cooks forced visit for repairs to Endeavour after grounding on the reef, through to the gold rushes that founded Cooktown as a busy trading centre. All this overlaid against the stories you have just heard from Willie Gordon and their influence on the early settlement.

We leave about 4pm and head out over Endeavour Reef where you can imagine the desperation Cook and his crew felt as they struggled to keep the Endeavour afloat. Further out we come to the edge of the continental shelf and the Ribbon Reefs that effectively trapped Cook amongst the maze of reefs we know as the Great Barrier Reef. Agincourt Reef is the furthers off shore reef where tourist boats operate from Port Douglas. As we head south we follow the line of reefs before turning toward Cairns and passing over Green Island.

We arrive in Cairns around 5pm. Free pick-up and delivery to your hotel in Cairns or the Northern Beaches to Palm Cove.
