About your local guide:

  • An award-winning historian of the Old Dominion, Rick Britton specializes in 18th- and 19th-century Virginia history. His areas of expertise include the American Civil War, the life and times of Thomas Jefferson, and the history of the central Piedmont. 
  • With over 200 published articles and essays under his belt, he’s the author of Albemarle & Charlottesville: An Illustrated History (2006), the award-winning Jefferson: A Monticello Sampler (2008), and Virginia Vignettes (Vol. I): Famous Characters & Events in Central Virginia History (2015).
  • Along with his writing, Rick conducts battlefield tours, teaches Virginia history classes, organizes history programming, illustrates maps for history books and web-sites, and lectures frequently on a wide range of Virginia history topics.

Tour Highlights:

  • Court Square Slave Block
  • The University of Virginia, headquarters of the Charlottesville General Hospital
  • Rio Hill, site of Albemarle County’s only clash of arms
