Well, here is one of the most popular one-day tours in Bulgaria - Plovdiv also won a competition and will be the European Capital of Culture for 2019! The Bachkovo monastery is the second biggest in Bulgaria and is enjoying a good revival - perhaps visited by as many visiotrs as those of the Rila monastery, with almost 1000 years of history of existence!!

Tour Detail

Getting to Plovdiv is easy. It's been easy for the last 6000 years! Situated in the middle of the upper Thracian plain, its location promises a warm climate, fruitful lands, lots of space, and rich history!

We'll start from your hotel at 9 o'clock and after less than a 2 hours drive we'll be at the foot of the hill where we can explore the Old Town. There are gems like the Ethnographical museum, Nebet tepe ancient (chalcolitic times) fortress ruins, The Roman Theatre and the St. Constantine and Helena church. Walking the cobbled streets has its charm, but please make sure you wear comfortable shoes and possibly no high-heels! Plovdiv city center reveals more than expected - The Roman stadium is there, next to the 15th century Djumaya mosque, still active, and after 200 m walk we'll see the well preserved ruins of the Odeon and the Roman Forum. All this walking along the longest pedestrian street in Europe! Are you getting excited? There's more...

The Bachkovo monastery was established in 1083 by Georgian generals and ever since then it's been active! Apart from the wonderful location in the slopes of the Rhodope mountains  next to a nice river, the monastery offers fascinating history about the times of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. iIn its 17th century church we make a prayer in front of the miraculous icon of Mary and the last excitement comes when we enter the Refectory hall, where you can see a uniquely depicted family tree of Christ!
